Alan Barrett has won the 2013 Network Information & Infrastructure (NII) Service Award. Mr Barrett who comes from South Africa won the award for his commitment to capacity building and Internet development in Africa. He has been involved in capacity building through both AfNOG and AFRINIC for many years and has been a key player in the African Internet community.

Barrett becomes the fifth winner of the Award. The award was presented to Mr Barrett by the convenor of AfNOG Dr. Nii Quaynor at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel during a gala dinner organised to celebrate the achievement of the Africa Internet Summit 2013 in Lusaka, Zambia.

The Fund for Internet Research and Education (FIRE) and AFRINIC is pleased to announce the 2013 Grantees.

These 11 projects have been selected and will receive a financial support of USD 10,000 as a reward for their contribution and promotion of Innovation on Access Provision, E-Developemnt and Freedom of Expression.

AFRINC has teamed up with numerous organisations and groups in Africa in attempts to promote access to affordable broadband in Africa through television channels.


Under the ambit of TV White Spaces, the organisations including Google, Internet Society, Microsoft, and the Association for Progressive Communications have organised a two-day (30-31 May 2013) forum in Dakar, Senegal, where issues relating to the expansion and provision of broadband Internet using television signals are being discussed.
